Horse riding back protectors are made from high-impact foam, designed to absorb and dissipate the energy from a fall to reduce the risk of damage to the rider's back; primarily the function of the horse riding back protector is to safeguard the rider's spine reducing the risk of fractures and bruising whilst offering a more discrete look than a traditional horse riding body protector.  

The use of horse riding back protectors have become increasingly common, particularly in show jumping, and dressage where riders are looking for discrete, additional protection without the bulk of a horse riding body protector.  Horse riding back protectors are traditionally a lightweight vest-style garment with foam protection covering the back region; the front of the garment is usually made from thin material with a zip for ease of wear; there is no protection provided by the front of the garment.
